A man's point of view

For this man's point of view I thought I would raise a issue that I have done in the past and it is one of the things in life I think there should be a law for.

I guess to alot of people it seems like such a trivial thing but to me it can have a long term affect.
So what am I talking about I hear you say.

I'm talking about games and the fact that there age restrictions on them that some parents don't seem to take any notice of. I work at a blockbuster and we rent games of all kinds for all consoles.
For each game there is a age rating and if a child under that age comes to the counter we have to refuse them. The law states that we cant serve to a person under the age of the certificate.

Yet all to often I found that a parent will come up to the counter with sometimes as higher rated game as a 18 and the child is sometimes as young as 7 or 8 years old and there is not a thing I can do to stop them from renting the game even though I know its the child who is going to play the game.

I think it is morally wrong but like I say there is nothing I can do to stop it I have tried little things like I will say to the parent " Do you realize that this game is such and such rating" and they will just look at me as if I have insulted them and say "Yes I realize thank you".

kids are so influential and seeing the content of a game that is above their age I believe can be harmful to them, there are the few instances where kids have gone to the extreme of acting out the games they have played often with tragic results.

I really think there should be a law that says if I think that the adult is renting a game for a child who is under the age of the game I could refuse them service.

they passed that law for alcohol. I think they should for movies and games.

If you have a point of view on my point of view then please leave me a comment

I agree with you but I'm afraid there is nothing that can be done.

I am often shocked at how violent and graphic games have become. What ever happened to the benign days of Mario Bros. and Tetrix?

I agree with you. There should be more ways to protect kids from "bad parenting."

i agree. I am a firm believer that violent movies/games lead to the desensitization of children- it corrupts their consciences.

I think its a societal turn toward less boundaries... everything's okay!
It's offensive to people to have morals or standards.

You wouldn't like me because I don't agree. I was so ticked when they made the seat belt law that I actually stopped wearing my seat belt. I don't think we need governments fingers in every aspect of our lives - we need to use common sense.

I'm lucky that all of my kids at 17 & up now but I did let them watch some R-rated films when they were young teens.

I think parents need to be educated. Do they put the info on games like they do movies about why things are rated what they are - violence, language, etc?

I agree 100% but it's up to the parents to set a good example. So sad that some just don't care and they are hurting their child's future by those types of influences. Great post Wayne.

I wholeheartedly agree with you but like Jennifer said, there really is nothing that can be done. & it is such a shame. The internet makes it so much easier for children to buy these games.

It disgusts me when I see my 10 year old cousin playing grand theft auto and other violent games. Just read books. That's what I say!

Yeah, Wayne, I can definitely see your point. It's very sad when that happens, but it really is up to the parents. It's unfortunate that some parents aren't looking out for their children the same way that you are.

I agree with you completely. I worked at blockbuster myself a few years back and also found myself appalled at the games and movies parents were renting for the kids with them. I like you would comment every so often on why it was rated the way it was and every once in a while I would get a surprised reaction and a parent returning it to its place, not often though. Most of the time it was like you, yes, thank you..I'm aware. Morals are heading to the toilet.
